It was a rainy Saturday morning on 4th February that saw the first Western Island Games Association (WIIGA) – Castle Grounds 5k run.

The WIIGA committee have been working in partnership with Active Schools and Sports Development to kick start the fundraising for future Island Games.

A total of 96 participants braved the wet weather to raising funds to help our local talented athletes to attend elite level competitions that the Island Games offers.

The event had a mixture of top athletes, recreational joggers and dogs.

WIIGA would like to thank the following individuals: Gavin Earons for planning the route & playing a significant part on the day (Lead cyclist), Jenna Stewart, Mairi Macsween for registering all the runners and issuing them with numbers, Adrienne Stewart and Jim Warnock for collating all the times, all the marshals – Manus McGee, John Emberson, Tod Macdonald, Marina Macleod, Jennifer Macleod, Hamish, Charlie Nicolson, Duncan Walker, Donnie Macleod, Jonny Prichard, Angela Macrae, Heather Munro, Iain GG Campbell, Ealafaidh Nicleoid, Kirsty Macleod, Jack Nelson, Ruaraidh Stewart and Stuart Baird for the Walkie Talkies. As well as the volunteer marshals WIIGA would like to thank Scottish water for providing the water for the 2½k water station and the at the finish, Grillburger, Strùpag and the Co-op for the cups, also the Co-op provided ice and mars bars for all participants, the WIIGA Chairperson for the prizes for the 1st male and female runner to cross the line and Stornoway trust for allowing the event to take place in the Castle Grounds.

Finally a big thank you to all the participants for making such an effort on the day & contributing to a successful event.  Well done.
