Road Bike Criterium

Paul Smith

Saturday afternoon was spent trying to work out the route of the Road Bike Criterium. The maze of one way streets that is the City of Rhodes made this an interesting experience - maybe that should be a life threatening experience! It is pretty much a case of he who hesitates is lost! Apart from major junctions there are no traffic lights and the idea of painting lines on the road to indicate right of way hasn't quite reached Rhodes yet. After a couple of exhilerating hours, we had the route cracked and Paul was brave enough to ride round it a couple of times - despite the heavy traffic.

All this turned out to be in vain, the local police decided that they weren't going to close the centre of Rhodes for a bike race! The alternative route was high up above the Acropolis, highly scenic but less challenging than the twisty town loop with its cobbled section. Paul was disappointed at this late change as the original route would have suited him down to a T.

For those who dont know what a Road Bike Criterium is - it is a race round a short circuit lasting about an hour. It is fast and furious and, normally, when you are lapped you are out! Because people had travelled so far, they waived the drop out rule for this race. The course was very fast, with one very fast left hand, off-camber corner and a short, sharp climb.

Right from the start, the pace was frantic and soon a small group broke away. Paul missed the breakaway but felt strong enough to try and bridge the gap - several times! Road racing is very tactical and the team-mates of those in the lead group would not help Paul in any way - in fact they did their best to slow him down every time they took a turn at the front. Eventually, as the sun began to set, Paul realised that he was not going to be allowed to chase down the leaders and decided to settle back and save his energy for the next day's mountain bike race. Paul had done very well in his first criterium race, gained valuable experience in the process and had done well enough to give him confidence that he could do well in the races to come.
