Gaelic Media boost for Western Isles team heading to Jersey

The Western Isles team heading to Jersey for the Natwest Island Games 2015 has been boosted by news of support from MG ALBA (The Gaelic Media Service).

The 2015 Island Games which are expected to attract around 4500 competitors, officials and supporters from around the world will open on Saturday 27 June and will see competitions taking place across 14 sports with the closing ceremony on Friday 3 July.

MG ALBA is the partner with the BBC in BBC ALBA, the Gaelic Television service and MG ALBA Chief Executive Donald Campbell said “MG ALBA places great emphasis on supporting the development of Gaelic-speaking talent particularly in areas such as broadcasting and film production through our FilmG competition (www.filmg.co.uk) and through the LearnGaelic.scot online resource (www.learngaelic.scot).

We have also followed the likes of Kerry MacPhee on BBC ALBA (www.bbc.co.uk/alba) and have in the past supported the development of the Lewis and Harris Women’s Football team many of whom we hope will be playing in Jersey. We are delighted to support the Western Isles team and we wish them every success in Jersey”

Councillor Alasdair MacLeod, Chairman of the Sustainable Development Committee of Comhairle nan Eilean also welcomed the involvement of MG ALBA saying “I am delighted to see MG ALBA as a major local employer in the Western Isles coming on board to support the team and it will be good to see the Gaelic language and culture well represented in Jersey. We wish the team every success in all the different events that they are participating in”

Iain GG Campbell, Western Isles Island Games Association (WIIGA) Secretary and General Team Manager for the 2015 Games welcomed the support of MG ALBA saying “It’s great to have the support from MG ALBA once again for the Island Games and it has given the team a huge boost as we prepare to set off for Jersey”

BBC Radio nan Gaidheal (103.5 – 105FM) and www.bbc.co.uk/radionangaidheal will be providing coverage of the NatWest Island Games 2015 from Jersey on various programmes including Aithris na Maidne, Coinneach MacIomhair, Feasgar, Siubhail gu Seachd with Derek Pluto and Spòrs na Seachdain while An Là the nightly News programme on BBC ALBA will also provide daily round-ups with Alasdair Fraser and Allan MacLeod.
