Kara Hanlon from Stornoway had a successful Scottish Gas National Open Swimming Championships at Tollcross last weekend, clocking some personal bests on her way to medal success.

In her Friday morning 100m Breast Stroke heat, she qualified for the "A" final with a PB of 1:13:46. In the evening final she finished in overall 7th place with a time of 1:13:47. As the only "Junior" (16 and under) in the Senior Final she became the Scottish Junior 100m Breast Stroke Champion.

In the 50m Breast Stroke heat on Saturday morning she clocked yet another PB, qualifying for the "A" final yet again with a time of 33:65. In the evening final she eclipsed this, reducing her PB to 33.14 and finishing in overall 5th place. Two "Juniors" had made it to the Senior Final, but with Kara the fastest, she became the Scottish Junior Champion for 50M Breast Stroke.

A brilliant double for the rising star of Western Isles swimming.
Kara is now in Majorca with the Highland Swimming Team for a week of intensive training. Before you think she's on a 'jolly', her first session involved 5600m which she described as 'pretty tough'.

Along with Kathryn Offer she will be among the medal hopes for the Western Isles Island Games Team as they head to the NatWest XV Games in Bermuda in July.
