Just when we thought the temperatures were starting to cool down yesterday (Thursday) was hotter than the rest of the days. Hoping for cooler temperatures ahead of tomorrow’s midday start half marathon are Alison Campbell, Mairi MacCormick and Alasdair Murray.  The men’s football squad will also be hoping for similar cooler conditions as they compete for 7th place against Menorca in the blistering 12.30pm heat.

Yesterday I headed to the much talked about football accommodation.  Having completed some training earlier in the day some of the boys were playing golf on the course which is located in the grounds of the chalets, whilst others were simply relaxing by the pontoon.  It looked quite the idyllic picture.  The accommodation throughout the island is relatively basic across the board it must be stated.  But the players seem to be settled, the only complaint which seems to be coming from them is the remoteness of the location and the fact that they would have liked to have been able to see more of the competitions taking place.

As dèidh dhuinn smaoineachadh gu robh e a’ fàs beagan nas fhuara bha an-dè (Diardaoin) nas teotha na làithean eile agus ann a’ phrìomh bhaile Marihamn bha e ___.  ‘S ann a’ mhiannachadh nach bidh e cho teth ri sin a tha Alison Caimbeul, Màiri NicArmaig agus Alasdair Moireach a tha a’ ruith an leth mharathon an-diugh aig meadhan là.  Bidh balaich am ball-coise a’ mhiannachadh an aon rud ‘s iad a’ strì an aghaidh Menorca aig 12.30f airson an t-seachdamh àite.

An-dè thug mi sgrìob a-mach chun an àite far sibh air mòran a chluinntinn mu dheidhinn – àitean fuirich na sgiobaidhean ball-coise.  As dèidh a bhith a’ trèanadh nas tràithe air an là bha feadhainn de na balaich a’ cluiche goilf air a’ chùrsa a tha as an làrach far a bheil na chalets aca agus bha feadhainn eile a’ gabhail air socair air a’ phontùn ri oir na locha.  Gu dearbha bha e a’ coimhead eireachdail agus an aimsir cho brèagha.  Feumaidh e a bhith air a ràdh nach eil gin de na àitean fuirich air feadh an eilean aig sàr àrd ìre.  Tha na cluicheadairean gu math dòigheil, an aon rud a tha mise air gearain a chluinntinn mu dheidhinn ‘s ann gu bheil iad ann an àite iomallach agus tha e air a bhith doirbh dhaibh a dhol a choimhead air farpaisean eile.

Great news for the swimmers earlier in the day with Grant MacLeod achieving another personal best and Kathryn Offer making the finals of the 50m Backstroke competition.  In the finals she cut one second of her personal best finishing with a time of 31.38.  The bronze medallist finished in 31.33.  This means that Kathryn was five hundredths of a second of achieving a bronze medal!  She however has set a new Western Isles record for the event and this is her finest performance at the Island Games to date.  Team Member and Manager Grant MacLeod said:

“I am totally delighted with Kathryn’s result and she can be very proud of her performance.  The team have performed exceptionally well and have set personal bests for most competitions.  The standard from Rhodes has risen greatly and 32 new swimming records have been set at these Games in Åland alone.  We can go home proud that we have achieved and indeed surpassed our targets”

Naidheachd dha rìreabh don sgioba snàimh nas tràithe an-dè nuair a fhuair Grant MacLeòid a’ faighinn tuilleadh atharrachadh a thoirt air a’ chlàr pearsanta aige agus fhuair Kathryn Offer troimhe chun a’ chuairt dheireannach de farpais an 50m backstroke.  As a’ chuairt dheireannach fhuair i air aon diog a thoirt far a’ chlàr pearsanta aice agus chrìochnaich ann an 31.38.  ‘S ann air 31.33 a chrìochnaich an caileag a fhuair am bonn umha.  Tha seo a’ ciallachadh gu robh Kathryn 5/100’s de diog air falbh bhon an treas àite.  Ach tha i air ùine ùr a’ chlàradh airson Sgioba nan Eilean Siar agus seo cho math sa tha i air a bhith aig Geamannan Eileanach gu ruige seo.  Thuirt Grant MacLeòid a tha cuideachd na Mhanaidsear air an Sgioba:

“Tha mi glan air mo dhòigh leis mar a chaidh do Khathryn agus faodaidh i a bhith gu math pròiseil.  Tha cùisean air a dhol sònraichte math don sgioba air fad agus tha sinn air uairean ùr a chur air a’ chlàr pearsanta againn ann am mòran de na rèisean a ghabh sinn pàirt ann.  Tha an ìre air sìor èirigh on a bha sinn ann an Rhodes agus tha 32 clàran ùr air a bhith air a dhèanamh aig geamannan Åland an t-seachdain-sa.  Faodaidh sinn a dhol dhachaigh moiteil gu bheil sinn air ar targaidean a ruighinn agus gu dearbha gu bheil sinn air a dhol seachad orra”.

Having encountered calibration problems or at least a difference from what they are used to, the shooting squad have been disappointed with their overall performance.  However, Donald MacInnes is currently in 6th position in the ABT Individual competition.  Providing he manages to hold onto that position this morning a medal is still a possibility.  They are also due to finish in a higher position than Rhodes in 2007 which is an achievement in itself.

As dèidh duilgheadasan calibration no co-dhiù eadar-dhealachadh as an rud air a bheil iad cleachdte tha e air a bhith na bhristeadh dùil don sgioba urchaireachd.  Ach, aig an ìre seo, tha Dòmhnall MacAonghais an-dràsta as an t-siathamh àite ann am farpais ABT do aon neach.  Mas urrainn dha fuireach as an àite sin air a’ mhadainn seo, tha cothrom aige duais a thogail as a’ chuairt dheireannach feasgar.  Cuideachd thathar an dùil gun crìochnaich iad aig ìre nas na Rhodes ann an 2007 agus tha sin na bhuannachd leis fhèin.

Earlier in the day Donnie MacLeod and Stewart Chalmers were in the same heat in the semi-finals of the 400m.  Donnie again put in a stunning performance, but it was evident when he completed in first place that he was conserving a great deal of strength and energy for the evening’s final.  Chalmers achieved another personal best in this race.  In the final Donnie was racing in lane four and started very strong but his main rival from Guernsey Tom Druce took the lead after around 200m.  Donnie can be proud to have achieved second place with a time of 48.82 and this will be the first medal he has gained at the Island Games.  Today he will compete in the 4 x 400 relay final at 12.15pm.

Nas tràithe air an là bha Donnie MacLeòid agus Stiùbhart Chlamers as an aon chuairt den iar chuairt dheireannach an 400m.  Bha Donnie sònraichte math agus bha e follaiseach ged a bhuannaich i an rèis gu furasta gu robh e fhathast a’ cumail neart air ais chun a’ chuairt dheireannach.  Fhuair Chalmers cuideachd ùair ùr air a’ chlàr pearsanta aige.  As a’ chuairt mu dheireadh thòisich Donnie làidir dha rìreabh ach as dèidh mu 200m chaidh Tom Druce à Guersney air thoiseach air.  Faodaidh Donnie a bhith pròiseil gun do ghlèidh e an dàrna àite leis an uair 48.82 agus seo a’ chiad bonn a tha e air a’ ghlèidheadh aig na Geamannan Eileanach.  Tha e an-diugh a’ gabhail pàirt as a’ chuairt mu dheireadh de farpais 4 x 400 relay aig 12.15f.

Eilidh MacKenzie’s chance of another gold medal gets even closer.  Yesterday she made the final of the 800m with the fastest qualifying time.  It really is a delight to watch Eilidh as she is so graceful when she runs and makes it looks so simple and effortless.  Today at 11am she will run in the final and Team Western Isles will be out in force to root her on to come home with a double gold. Tha an cothrom aig Eilidh NicChoinnich bonn òr eile a’ ghlèidheadh a’ tighinn nas fhaisge.  An-dè fhuair i troimhe chun a’ chuairt mu dheireadh de farpais an 800m as an ùine as luaithe.  Tha e na thlachd a bhith a’ coimhead Eilidh a’ ruith, tha i cho grinn a’ ruith agus tha i a’ coimhead cho comhfhurtail agus shoileadh tu gur e an rud as furasta san t-saoghal a tha i a’ dèanamh!  Aig 11m an-diugh bidh Sgioba nan Eilean Siar a toirt ar làn taic do dh’Eilidh agus bidh sinn an dòchas gu faigh i bonn òr eile.

Eve Carrington

Eve Carrington who came home from Rhodes with both silver and bronze medals was competing in the triple jump competition yesterday evening.  Eve’s first jump of 10.94 was her best and she was sitting in 3rd place until the fourth round.  She was only three centimetres off bronze and tonight’s jump was considerably behind her personal best.  However she remains focused and knows what training lies ahead for when she returns.

Having been staying the same accommodation as the athletes it has been excellent to get an insight to their preparations, strict disciplines and general thoughts and feelings pre and post races.  What has struck me is the sense of team spirit and the support they all offer each other.

Thàinig Eve Carrington dhachaigh `a Rhodes le bonn airgid agus bonn umha agus a-raoir bha i a’ gabhail pàirt ann an farpais an triple jump.  Fhuair i 10.94 air a’ chiad leum agus sin an fhear as fhèarr a rinn i.  Bha i as an treas àite suas chun a’ cheathramh chuairt agus cha robh i ach trì ceudameatairean air cùl an caileag a fhuair an treas àite.  Chan eil 10.94 faisg air an astar as fhèarr aice agus tha fios aice air an trèanadh a tha gu bhith air thoiseach oirre nuair a thilleas i.

Seach gu bheil mi air a bhith a’ fuireach as an aon àite fuirich ri na lùth chleasaichean tha e air a bhith math a’ faighinn eòlas air an obair ullachaidh a tha iad a’ dèanamh ro-làimh agus fear a’ faighinn beachd air na faireachdainn aca mus tèid iad gu rèis agus nuair a thilleas iad.  Agus feumaidh mi a ràdh gu bheil e sònraichte math a bhith a’ faicinn an taic agus an dàimh a tha eadar an sgioba.

Mention must also be given to Sinead MacLeod who scored a hat trick in the ladies football game on Wednesday evening against Hitra.  This is the first time any footballer, male or female from the Western Isles has completed such a feat at any Island Games.

The girls again showed their feisty spirit with a crushing 5-0 defeat against Guernsey.  The game saw goal action from Laura Johnston (two goals), Jane Nicolson, Jenna Stewart and Marina MacDonald.  This means the girls won two games and lost two games and finished 3rd in their groups narrowly missing getting through to the next stage.  They have performed really well and have demonstrated tremendous focus and drive.  They can return home to the Western Isles proud of their achievements.

Feumar iomradh a thoirt seachad air Sinead NicLeòid a fhuair trì tadhail aig a’ gheama oidhche Shiadain an aghaidh Hitra.  Seo a’ chiad uair a tha cluicheadair ball-coise bho Sgioba nan Eilean Siar, fireannach no boireannach, air seo a’ dhèanamh aig na Geamannan Eileanach.

Sheall Sgioba Ball-coise nam Ban a-raoir cho cumhachd sa dh’fhaodadh iad a bhith nuair a bhuannaich iad 5.0 an aghaidh Guernsey.  Fhuair Laura Johnston dà thadhal,  agus Sine MacNeacail, Jenna Stiùbhart agus Marina NicDhòmhnaill aon tadhal an duine.  Tha seo a’ ciallachadh gun do bhuannaich na caileagan dà gheama agus chaill iad dà gheama.  Chrìochnaich iad as an treas àite as a’ bhuidheann agus bha i faisg dha rìreabh faighinn a-steach dhan an ath chuairt.  Tha iad air a bhith a’ cluiche math dha rìreabh agus sheall iad cho sgileil sa tha iad.  Faodaidh iad tilleadh air ais do na h-Eileanan an Iar gu math moiteil.

Day three for our golfers saw David Black finishing on the same score as yesterday, 83,  Norrie ‘Onions; MacDonald on 80, Andy MacDonald on 88 and Kevin MacRae on 76.  The team are somewhat disappointed with their performance but have no excuses according to Team Manager Norrie ‘Tomsh’ MacDonald although playing for five and a half hours in 30C is not something they encounter regularly!  They will play their final round of golf today at their favoured Castle Course.  Tomorrow night they will have a clear picture of where the team will be placed but they are currently in joint 7th  position.

Air an treas là de dh’ fharpaisean chrìochnaich Daibhidh Black air 83, Tormod ‘Onions’ Dòmhnallach air 80, Andy Dòmhnallach air 88 agus Kevin MacRath air 76.  Chan eil an sgioba cho toilichte idir leis mar a tha a’ dol dhaibh ach chan eil leisgeulan sam bith aca a-rèir Manaidsear na Sgioba, Tormod ‘Tomsh’ Dòmhnallach ged nach e eil iad cleachdte ri bhith a’ cluiche còig uairean a thìde gu leth ann an teas 30C!  Cluichidh iad a-màireach aig Cùrsa a’ Chaisteil a tha a’ còrdadh riutha nas fhèarr.  Aig an ìre seo tha iad as an t-seachdamh àite mar Sgioba.
