The sun continues to shine in Åland and I was fortunate enough yesterday to spend some time with the golf team as they played their second day of four.  The golf courses in Åland are in a stunning location by the edge of a castle, with a lake nearby and the greens look spectacular.  But more importantly how did the team perform today?  Team member, Andy MacDonald explained:

“Yesterday we played the King’s Course which is by far the more difficult of the two courses.  Today we played the Castle Course and I am pleased to say that we showed a slight improvement overall.  Kevin MacRae and I scored both 76 with Norrie close behind with 77.  David Black scored an 83 but he played a lot better than the score suggests.  Tomorrow we are playing the Kings Course and I hope we can continue to improve as the week progresses”.

Tha a’ ghrian fhathast a’ deàrrsadh ann an Åland agus an-de bha mi fortanach gu leòr ùine a chur seachad còmhla ris an sgioba goilf ‘s iad a’ cluiche an dàrna là a-mach a ceithir.  Tha na cùrsaichean goilf ann an Åland ann an àite bòidheach, ri taobh caisteal agus le loch ri thaobh.  Ach nas cudromaiche ciamar a fhuair na balaich air adhart?  Thuirt Andy Dòmhnallach:

“An-dè bha sinn a’ cluich aig Cùrsa an Rìgh agus tha sin fada nas duilghe nan cùrsa eile.  An-diugh chluich sinn aig Cùrsa a’ Chaisteil agus tha mi toilichte a ràdh gun do chluich sinn beagan nas fheàrr an-diugh.  Fhuair mi fhìn agus Kevin MacRath 76 agus bha Norrie faisg oirnn le 77.  Fhuair Daibhidh Black le 83 agus chluich e fada nas fheàrr na tha sin..  Tha sinn air ais a-màireach aig Cùrsa an Rìgh agus tha mi an dòchas gun urrainn dhuinn ar geama a leasachadh mar a tha na làithean a’ dol seachad”.

It was another big day for our island athletes who gave some great performances.  Chirsty MacLeod competed in the 5000m track event and finished in 7th position with a time of 19.46 which is a very respectable time indeed. ‘S e là mòr eile a bha ann do ar lùth chleasaichean agus rinn feadhainn aca fìor mhath.  Bha Chirsty NicLeòid a’ gabhail pàirt ann am farpais 5000m agus chrìochnaich e as an t-seachdamh àite leis an ùine 19.46 - uine fior mhath!

Moving onto another athlete by the name of MacLeod, Donnie MacLeod.  It was a delight to watch him perform yesterday.  He effortlessly secured a place in the semi-final of the 400m with a time of 49.54.  His performance was excellent and his display of sheer power, particularly on the final straight, proved how much talent he has.  He will compete in the semi-final today at 12.50. Gu fear eile de Chlann Ic Leòid a-nise, Donnie MacLeòid.  Bha e na thlachd a bhith ga choimhead.  Fhuair e troimhe chun iar-chuairt dheireannach an 400m leis an ùine 49.54.  Sheall e cho làidir agus cumhachdach sa tha e, gu h-àraidh air as an 100m mu dheireadh – balach tàlantach  dha rìreabh.  Bidh e a’ farpais as an iar chuairt dheireannach an-diugh fhèin aig 12.50f.

Donnie was also part of the 4 X 400m event.  Joining him in the team were Stewart Chalmers, Cameron Ross and Rory McClure.  They sailed through their heat and are currently in second place going into the finals with a time of 3.36.28 behind Guernsey who have a time of 3.23.31.  That final will take place on Friday lunch time.

Stewart Johnston performed in the long jump and although he did not get placed in the event he did well to compete at all considering he sustained a hamstring injury.  Stewart commented:

“I am quite disappointed with my performance but without the fantastic treatment and expert advice given by our physiotherapy Careen MacKay team I certainly would not have been able to compete.  I am having a fantastic time and the experience I have gained from competing has been invaluable”.

The boy’s football team had a much deserved day off today and some even decided to go fishing at a nearby lake – well they say you can take a boy out of Lochs!  Or boys as the case may be!  They will play Menorca for a 5th or 7th place finish tomorrow at 12.45pm.

No rest for the ladies team today as they faced the Norwegian island of Hitra.  It was a great night for the girls securing three points with a defeat of 4-1.  Sinead MacLeod had a hat trick and Jenna Stewart also scored a penalty.  They face Guernsey tomorrow evening in the final group game.  We hope that they will secure a further three points then.

Although our swimmers failed to qualify for any finals they continued to achieve personal bests in their competitions which is fantastic given that one of the team Kathryn Offer only had five minutes between races.  Ceitlin Russell Smith is now finished with competitions but Grant Macleod and Kathryn Offer will again compete tomorrow in freestyle and backstroke events.

Bha Donnie cuideachd na bhall de sgioba an 4 X 400m agus còmhla ris as an sgioba bha Stiùbhart Chalmers, Cameron Ross agus Rory McLure.  Fhuair iad troimhe chun an ath chuairt gu furasta agus tha iad as an dàrna àite a’ dol a-steach den chuairt dheireannach leis an ùine 3.36.28 air cùl Guersney aig an robh 3.23.31.  Bidh a’ chuairt dheireannach a’ gabhail àite a-màireach.

Bha Stiùbhart Johnston a’ gabhail pàirt ann am farpais an leum fada agus ged nach robh e a-measg an fheadhainn a fhuair duais rìnn e fìor mhath pàirt a ghabhail idir oir ghoirtich e fèith na h-iogsaid.  Thuirt Stiùbhart:

“Tha e na bhristeadh dùil dhomh nach deach cùisean cho math dhomh ach as aonais an leigheis agus an comhairle bhon anaclair-cuirp Careen NicAoidh cha bhithinn air a bhith a’ gabhail pàirt idir.  Tha an turas a’ còrdadh rium fìor mhath agus tha mi air deagh eòlas fhaighinn a bhiodh feumail dha rìreabh dhomh”.

Bha là dheth aig balaich a’ bhall-coise – rud a bha iad gu math airidh air.  Agus chaidh feadhainn aca a dh’iasgach air an loch a tha faisg orra – uill faodaidh tu balach a thoirt a-mach as na Lochan.  No balaich mar a dh’fhaodadh a chùis a bhith!  Cluichidh iad Menorca airson an còigeamh no an t-seachdamh àite a-màireach aig 12.45f.

Ach cha robh là dheth aig na caileagan ‘s iad a’ cluich an aghaidh Sgioba Hitra à Nirribhidh.  ‘S e oidhche air leth a bha aig an sgioba agus iad a’ buannachadh 4-1.  Fhuair Sinead NicLeòid trì tadhail agus fhuair Jenna Stiùbhart breab peanas.  Bidh iad a’ cluiche an aghaidh Guernsey a-nochd anns a’ gheama mu dheireadh as a Bhuidheann aca.  Tha sinn an dòchas gum bidh e comasach dhaibh trì puingean eile fhaighinn.

Ged nach d’ fhuair ar Sgioba Snàimh troimhe chun an ath chuairt tha iad air piseach mòr a thoirt air a’ chlàr pearsanta.  Tha sinn math dha rìreabh oir cha robh ach còig mionaidean aig Kathryn Offer eadar gach farpais.  Tha Ceitlin Russell Nic a’ Ghobhainn a-nise deiseil ach bidh Grant NicLeòid agus Kathryn Offer a farpais anns a freestyle agus am backstroke.

Athletics
