Eilidh shows off her gold medal

It’s fantastic to begin with the news of Eilidh MacKenzie’s gold for her phenomenal performance in the 1500m.  Here is a round-up of the other events which took place yesterday (Tuesday).  And I am pleased to say that the good news doesn’t end there!

Following on from the crushing 5-0 defeat against the Isle of Man last night, the Western Isles men showed their warrior like qualities on the pitch last night (Tuesday).  They defeated the Falkland Islands 7-1 with goal action from Hector MacPhee, Michael MacKay, Martin MacLean and two goals from Andy Murray and Dan MacPhail.  The Western Isles squad won two out of three of their matches in Group D, however the Isles of Man won all three games meaning they will go through to the final stages.  It is still to be confirmed whether the Western Isles boys will play for 5th our 7th position on Thursday. Co-manager Billy Flower commented:

“I am very proud of the boy’s performance and they made a fantastic recovery having been pretty hurt after the match against the Isle of Man.  They have shown a superb attitude throughout and I look forward to hopefully playing for 5th position, if not 7th. Given the very high standard of play in this tournament and the problems with the team faced last week through injury and last minute changes, I am delighted with each and every one of them”.

Present at the men’s game representing the New Federation Board were the Secrétaire Général, Jean-Luc Kit and the Vice-President Cristophe Croze who is also a football agent in Finland.  The NF Board have been established since 2003 and run the Viva World Cup and hope to work alongside the Island Games Association to ensure international football tournaments for islands and small communities take place on an annual basis. They were so impressed with the standard of play from the Western Isles team that they have invited the team to take part in an international football tournament which takes place every two years, and will be taking place in Gozo in Malta next June.  They will be present tomorrow night to watch the Western Isles play for either 5th or 7th position.  This is fantastic news for the Western Isles and although discussions are at an early stage we hope that this will be a chance for the boys to develop their play at international level.

In the Women’s Football competition the Western Isles ladies were up against the Isle of Wight and were the stronger team throughout the match.  However the Isle of Wight clinched the three points in the first half by manner of a penalty.   The game finished 1-0. Tomorrow evening they will play against Norwegian team Hitra.

It must be remembered that the games are not only about competing, they are also about personal and team development, and the athletics and swimming squad have demonstrated their sheer determination and focus when it comes to development.  Our swimmers have done fantastically well with Ceitlin Russell Smith knocking a whopping 13 seconds of her personal best for the 200m breaststroke.  Grant MacLeod knocked 5 seconds off his time for the 50m breaststroke and Kathryn Offer is also to be commended for also achieving a personal best and finished 13th out of 30 competitors.

Tuesday marked the first day of play for our local golfers comprising of Andy MacDonald, Norrie ‘Onions’ MacDonald, David Black and Kevin MacRae.  Having had two great practise rounds on Sunday and Monday the boys were somewhat disappointed with today’s performance which took place at Åland’s King’s Course.  Norrie and David both finished on 83 and both Andy and Kevin finished with 78.  Today’s leaders Bermuda, finished on 71.  Tomorrow the boys will complete a round at the nearby Castle Course, in beautiful surroundings.   They are currently sitting in 8th position as a team after the first of a four day event.

And finally the shooting team have been out now three days consecutively and they are struggling to show what they are really made of.  Team member, Donald John MacInnes explained why:

“Different targets are being used and the standard of shooting has been greatly affected.  None of the teams are shooting particularly well and everyone is feeling it so we are not on our own in that respect”.

Tha e miorbhaileach tòiseachadh leis an naidheachd mu bonn òr Eilidh NicChoinnich a bhuannaich i anns an 1500m.  Seo sùil eile air na farpaisean eile a bha a’ gabhail àite an-diugh (Dimàirt). Ach tha gu leòr naidheachd mhath eile agam cuideachd!

As dèidh mar a chaill Sgioba Ball-coise nam Fear 5-0 an aghaidh Eilean Mhanainn a-raoir, sheall ar balaich cho gaisgeil sa tha iad a-nochd.  Bhuannaich iad 7-1 an aghaidh na Falklands le tadhail bho Eachann Mac-a-Phì, Mìcheal MacAoidh, Màrtainn MacIlleathain, agus dà thadhal an duine do Andy Moireach agus Dan MacPhàil. Chan eil iad air ainmeachadh fhathast an ann airson an còigeamh no an t-seachdamh àite a bhios balaich nan Eilean Siar a strì.  Thuirt Co-Mhanaidsear na Sgioba:

“Tha mi gu math moiteil às na balaich agus rinn iad fìor mhath tilleadh air ais a-nochd as dèidh mar a chaidh dhaibh a-raoir an aghaidh Eilean Mhanainn.  Tha iad air sealltainn deagh sheasamh as na geamannan a chluich iad agus tha mi gu mòr an dòchas gum bidh sinn a’ cluich airson a’ chòigeamh àite, no an t-seachdamh àite.  Bha e follaiseach gu robh na sgiobaidhean as am farpais seo a’ cluich aig sàr àrd ìre agus bha duilgheadasan againn an t-seachdain a chaidh leis mar a chaill sinn dithis a chaidh an leòn.  Ach tha mi toilichte dha rìreabh leis mar a tha a h-uile duine aca air iad fhèin a’ ghiùlain".

An làthair aig a’ gheama bha dithis bho Bòrd an New Federation an Rìanaiche aca, Jean-Luc Kit agus an Iar Neach-Gairm Cristophe Croze a tha cuideachd na àidseant ball-coise ann an Fhionnlainn.  Tha Bòrd an NF air a bhith stèidhichte o 2003 agus 's iad a tha air cul Cupa VIVA na Cruinne agus ‘s an àm ri teachd thathar an dòchas gum bidh iad ag obair le Comunn na Geamannan Eileanach gus dèanamh cinnteach gu bheil farpais ball-coise eadar-nàiseanta a’ gabhail àite gach bliadhna.  Bha iad toilichte dha rìreabh leis an ìre cluich aig balaich nan Eilean Siar gun tug iad cuireadh seachad dhaibh a thighinn gu farpais eadar-nàiseanta ann an Gozo ann am Malta an ath bhliadhna.  Bidh iad an làthair an ath-oidhche airson Sgioba nan Eilean Siar fhaicinn a’ strì airson achòigeamh no an seachdamh àite.  S e deagh naidheachd a tha seo do na h-Eileanan Siar agus ged a tha còmhraidhean fhathast aig tràth ìre thathar an dòchas gu bheil seo na dheagh chothrom dha na balaich a bhith a’ cluiche aig ìre eadar-nàiseanta.

Ann am farpais ball-coise nam ban bha Sgioba nan Eilean Siar an aghaidh an Isle of Wight agus gu dearbha ‘s iad ar clann nighean bha na bu làidire tron gheama.  Ach ‘s iad an Isle of Wight a ghlèidh na trì puingean as dèidh breab peanais as a’ chiad leth agus chrìochnaich e 1-0.  An ath-oidhche cluichidh iad an aghaidh sgioba à Nirribhidh, Hitra.

Feumar cuimhneachadh nach ann a-mhàin mu farpais a tha na geamannan seo, tha iad cuideachd mu leasachadh, ann an sgioba no gu pearsanta, agus tha ar lùth-chleasaichean agus an luchd snàmh air sealltainn cho daingeann sa dealasach sa tha iad a thaobh obair leasachaidh.  Tha an Sgioba Snàmh air a dhèanamh fìor mhath le Ceitlin Russell Nic a’ Ghobhainn a’ toirt trì diogan deug bhon chlàr pearsanta as an 200m breaststroke.  Thug Grant MacLeoig còig diogan bhon a’ chlàr pearsanta aigesan agus bu chòir iomradh a thoirt air Kathryn Offer a chrìochnaich 13 a-mach à 30 agus fhuair i air an ùine aice air a clàr pearsanta a thoirt sìos cuideachd.

‘B e Dimàirt a’ chiad là a bha an sgioba goilf a’ cluich, Andy Dòmhnallach, Tormod ‘Onions’ Dòmhnallach, Daibhidh Black agus Kevin MacRath.  As dèidh a bhith a’ cluich dà chuairt Là na Sabaid agus Diluain a bha fìor mhath dhan a h-uile duine bha e na bhristeadh dùil dhaibh an-diugh nach do chluich iad cho math sa mhiannachadh iad aig Cùrsa an Rìgh ann an Åland.  Chrìochnaich Daibhidh agus Tormod air 83 agus Andy agus Kevin air 78.  ‘S ann le 71 a chrìochnaich an sgioba as fhèarr, Bermuda.  An-diugh (Diciadain) cluichidh iad aig Cùrsa a’ Chaisteil, far a bheil seallaidhean bòidheach.  Tha iad an-dràsta a’ suidhe as an ochdamh àite as dèidh a’ chiad là a-mach a ceithir.

Agus mu dheireadh an-drasta, tha Sgioba Urchaireachd nan Eilean Siar air trì làithean a chluich agus tha e gu math doirbh dhaibh sealltainn dìreach dè cho math sa dh’fhaodadh iad a bhith.  Mar a mhìnich Dòmhnall Iain MacAonghais a tha anns an sgioba.

"’S e targaidean eadar-dhealaichte a tha iad a’ cleachdadh an seo agus tha seo air fìor dhroch bhuaidh a thoirt air ìre cluiche na   farpaisean.  Chan eil duine seach duine againn a’ dèanamh cho math sin agus tha sinn uile as an aon suidheachadh”.
