Football

A disappointing day for our footballers who were both playing against a fellow Celtic island, the Isle of Man.  The women were first up, playing in the scorching heat at 4pm. The team began very well and the first half was exciting and fast paced. Jenna Stewart scored a sublime goal in the 30th minute equalising with the Manx side to make it 1-1. However, in the second half the Isle of Man really showed their strength, scoring three further goals which saw them win by 4-1. Tomorrow they face the Isle of Wight in another 4pm clash.

The Men’s side lost 5-0 to the Manx side. Following on from the success of the men’s first game against Gotland where they secured a 2-1 victory, morale was high going into the second match however, the Isle of Man team, like their female counterparts demonstrated their sheer power and class. This evening they will play against the Falkland’s in the final group match. To ensure qualification to the final stages the Western Isles team need a win against the Falkland’s and the Isle of Man need to lose their match against Gotland.

Bristeadh dùil dha na sgiobaidhean ball-coise againn ge-tà ‘s nam fireannaich agus na boireannaich  cluich an aghaidh Eilean Ceilteach eile, Eilean Mhanainn.  Thòisich Sgioba nam Ban aig 4f aig àm nuair a bha e fhathast gu math teth. Chluich iad fìor mhath aig an toiseach agus bha a’ chiad leth luath agus làn tachartasan. As dèidh leth uair a thìde fhuair Jenna Stiùbhart tadhal sònraichte dha rìreabh agus dh’fhàg sin cùisean aig 1-1.  Ach as an dàrna leth sheall Eilean Mhanainn cho làidir sa tha iad a fhuair iad trì tadhail eile a’ crìochnachadh 4-1.  Cluichidh iad an Isle of Wight a-màireach aig 4f.

Gu mì-fhortanach chaill Sgioba nam Fear 5-0 an aghaidh Eilean Mhanainn.  As dèidh cho math sa chaidh dhaibh oidhche na Sabaid, bha iad làn spionnaidh a’ dol a-steach dhan an dàrna geama seo, ach, coltach ri boireannaich Eilean Mhanainn, sheall na fireannaich cho làidir agus cho èasgaidh sa tha iad.  A-nochd cluichidh iad an aghaidh na Falkland’s as a’ gheama mu dheireadh as a’ Bhuidheann aca.  Feumaidh iad buannachadh a-nochd agus dh’fheumadh Gotland buannachadh an aghaidh Eilean Mhanainn.

Athletics

Our young athletes, Rory McLure and Stewart Chalmers competed in the 800m heats and although they did not qualify for the finals they did themselves and the Western Isles team proud. Both boys secured personal bests with Rory knocking four seconds off his previous time. Stewart led the way in his heat up until the 600m mark and finished a close third. The boys were delighted at their performance and have gained invaluable experience at competing to an extremely high standard.

Bha ar lùth-chleasaichean, Rory McLure agus Stiùbhart Chalmers a’ gabhail pàirt ann am farpais 800m agus ged nach d’ fhuair iad troimhe chun a’ chuairt mu dheireadh rinn iad fìor mhath agus bu chòir dhuinn a bhith moiteil.  Ruith iad an rèis as an ùine as luaithe a rinn iad a-riamh agus thug Rory ceithir diogan bhon ùine aige.  As a’ chuairt aige, bha Stiùbhart a’ leantainn suas gu 600m agus chrìochaich iad as an treas àite.  Tha na balaich gu math toilichte leis mar a chaidh dhaibh agus tha iad air eòlas prìseil fhaighinn ann a bhith a’ gabhail pàirt ann am farpaisean aig sàr àrd ìre.

Swimming

In another part of the island, our swimmers were taking to the water in very hot temperatures inside the arena. Caitlin Russell Smith and Kathryn Offer both achieved personal bests for the particular size of pool and finished in 20th and 17th positions respectively. They will complete in more events tomorrow along with Grant MacLeod.

Ann am pàirt eile den eilean, bha ar luchd snàmh a’ snàmh airson a’ chiad uair ann an togalach gu math teth.  Rinn Ceitlin Russell Nic a’ Ghobhainn agus Kathryn Offer math dha rìreabh, a’ toirt diogan air falbh bhon ùine aca anns an 50m breaststroke airson an seòrsa ionad snàmh sin.  Chrìochnaich Ceitlin as an 20mh àite agus Kathryn as an 17mh àite.  Bidh iad a’ gabhail pàirt ann am farpaisean eile a-màireach còmhla ri Grant MacLeòid.
