GOLDEN GIRL OF RHODES STRIKES AGAIN!
30 Òg Mhìos
DUAIS R EILE DO RIONNAG RHODES!

Eilidh with her gold medal

The gold medal winner in the 800m and bronze in the 1500m in Rhodes, Eilidh MacKenzie, has achieved gold in the 1500m in Åland this evening.  This is the first gold medal of the games for the Western Isles team and has given them all a huge boost.  Eilidh sailed through the qualifiers on Sunday evening leading the way although she was under her personal best time. Tha Eilidh NicChoinnich, a bhuannaich bonn òr as an 800m agus am bonn umha anns an 1500m ann an Rhodes 2007, air bonn òr eile a’ ghlèidheadh a-nochd ann am farpais 1500m ann an Åland.  Seo a’ chiad bonn òr a tha Sgioba nan Eilean Siar air a’ ghlèidheadh aig Geamannan 2009 tha e air togail mhòr a thoirt dhaibh uile.   Bha Eilidh as a’ chiad àite a’ dol a-steach dhan am farpais, ged nach d’ fhuair i faisg air an t-àm bhon chlàr pearsanta aice.

Eilidh on the way to her gold medal

This evening’s race took place at 7.50pm local time, and Eilidh put in a phenomenal performance.  She looked comfortable and strong throughout the race and finished with a time of 4.34.83, way outperforming her fellow competitors.  Eilidh said:

“I was quite pleased with the way I ran, the other girls gave me a hard time and it was a good race. Rachael Franklin from the Isles of Man who finished in second place was on my shoulder the whole time.  I was holding on as hard as I could for the last 600m and  thinking ‘please don’t go past me’”.

Earlier in the evening the anthem of the Western Isles team, Bays of Harris, could be heard throughout the Wiklöf Holding Arena when Alison Campbell received her bronze medal for the 10,000m, and it was a delight to hear it again as Eilidh stood on the winner’s podium to receive her first gold of the 2009 Island Games.  She will be competing again on Thursday morning in the 800m qualifiers and we hope to hear the tune Bay’s of Harris!

‘S ann aig 7.50f, àm ionadail, a thòisich an rèis agus bha e mìorbhaileach a bhith a’ coimhead Eilidh a’ ruith.  Bha i a’ coimhead comhfhurtail agus làidir tron rèis agus crìochnaich e leis an ùine 4.34.83, gu math air thoiseach air na farpaisich eile.  Thuirt Eilidh:

“Bha mi gu math toilichte leis mar a ruith mi, thug na caileagan eile deagh rèis dhomh agus ‘s e rèis math dha rìreabh a bha ann.  Bha Rachael Franklin a chrìochnaich as an dàrna àite air mo ghualainn fad na h-ùine.  Chùm mi orm airson agus airson an 600m mu           dheireadh bha mi a’ smaoineachadh ‘na tèid seachad orm’”.

Nas tràithe air an fheasgar chluinnear fonn Sgioba nan Eilean Siar, ‘Bays of Harris’ ann an Ionad Wiklöf nuair a chaidh Alison Caimbeul suas airson am bonn umha bho farpais an 10,000m agus bha e na thlachd a chluinntinn a-rithist agus Eilidh a’ nochdadh air an àrd ùrlar airson am bonn òr aice a ghleidheadh – agus gu dearbha bha i airidh air!  Bidh i a’ farpais madainn Diardaoin anns a’ chiad chuairt de farpais 800m.  Bidh sinn beò an dòchas na Bays of Harris a chluinntinn a-rithist!
