The 13th NatWest Island Games officially got underway on Saturday the 27th of June on the Finnish island of. Åland   Team Western Isles arrived in Åland in time to be shuttled to the Official Opening Ceremony which was held in the Wiklöf Holding Arena, in the main town of Mariehamn.  Unlike Rhodes in 2007, the team are being accommodated in various locations throughout the island and competition venues are also scattered across the island, making bus journeys a regular routine for competitors and officials alike.

For most athletes Sunday was a day spent acclimatising to the unusually warm temperatures the island is currently seeing.  However, for others it was a case of getting underway with competitions immediately.  The shooting team, consisting of Donald John MacInnes, Donald John Cameron and Michael Cole took part in the Sporting Team Event and finished in 12th position.  As Team Manager Michael commented:

“We are very pleased with the shooting facilities in Äland and we are looking forward to the week ahead.  We are taking part in Skeet and individual competitions throughout the week and are   hopeful we can build on today’s result.  The heat in Rhodes was virtually unbearable and although temperatures are surprisingly warm here, we hope that it won’t be a disadvantage to us”.

Thòisich na 13mh Geamannan Eileanach NatWest gu h-oifigeil air Disathairne 27 Òg Mhìos air eilean Åland anns an Fhionnlainn.  Ràinig Sgioba nan Eilean Siar ann an ùine a dhol gu Seirbheis Fosglaidh na Geamannan a ghabh àite ann an Ionad Wiklöf, anns a’ bhaile as motha ann an Åland, Mariehamn.  Eu-coltach ri Rhodes ann an 2007, tha an sgioba a’ fuireach ann an diofar àitean air feadh an eilean agus tha farpaisean sgapte ann an làraich eadar-dhealaichte cuideachd, mar sin tha a h-uile duine a’ fàs gu math cleachdte ri bhith a’ siubhal air na busaichean!

Airson a mhòr chuid de na lùth-chleasaichean chaidh Là na Sabaid a chur seachad a’ gabhail air an socair agus a’ fàs cleachdte ris an teas, rud nach robh dùil ris.  Ach do chuid, thòisich na farpaisean air a’ chiad là.  Bha an sgioba Urchaireachd, Dòmhnall Iain MacAonghais, Dòmhnall Iain Camshron agus Mìcheal Cole a’ gabhail pàirt ann an Farpais Sgioba agus chrìochnaich iad as an darna àite deug.  Thuirt Mìcheal, Manaidsear na Sgioba:

“Tha sinn air leth toilichte le goireasan urchaireachd Åland agus tha sinn gu mòr a’ coimhead air adhart ris an t-seachdain a tha air thoiseach oirnn.  Tha sinn a’ gabhail pàirt ann am farpaisean Skeet agus farpaisean aon duine agus tha sinn an dòchas gun cùm sinn oirnn a’ dol bho neart gu neart.  Bha an teas ann an Rhodes na dhuilgheadas dhuinn, agus ged a tha e gu math blàth an seo, tha sinn an dòchas nach bidh e na thrioblaid”.
