FINAL PREPARATION FOR ÄLAND

The finest athletes from across the Western Isles are this week preparing to head to the 13th NatWest Island Games which will be held in the Island of Äland in Finland.  After months of hard training and dedication to their chosen sport, the team will head away on Saturday the 27th of June on a chartered flight bound for Äland.

This will be the third Games the Western Isles have participated in having been to Shetland in 2005 and Rhodes in 2007.   Having competed at a high level and seen some considerable success at previous Games, the team are hopeful they can again perform to a very high standard.

Chair of the Western Isles Island Games Association, Councillor Iain Morrison said:
“It’s hard to believe that the Games have come round again so quickly.  This is a fantastic opportunity for our athletes to compete at a very high standard against islanders of a similar standard of performance.  For many athletes, participating at the Island Games can be the first step in launching their career in their chosen field.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank Community Councils, local Councillor’s, Club Gnìomhachas nan Gàidheal and also member’s of the wider community for the support they have given individuals and teams over the last few months of fundraising.   However, without the incredible support of our main sponsors, Bardon Hebrides and MG ALBA and Harris Tweed Hebrides, this would not be possible.  I am thoroughly looking forward to the week in Äland and I hope we will return with a clutch of medals!”.

Daily updates from Äland will be available to view on the Western Isles Island Games Association website at www.wiiga.com and at www.mgalba.com.  The BBC will provide daily coverage on Radio nan Gàidheal’s Aithris na Maidne and Aithris an Fheasgair news programmes and on the weekly programme Spòrs na Seachdain and also nightly on the Gaelic television news programme An Là on Sky 168 and Freeview 110.

SGIOBA NAN EILEAN SIAR A’ DEISEALACHADH AIRSON ÄLAND

Tha cuid de na lùth-chleasaichean as fheàrr bho air feadh nan Eilean Siar an t-seachdainsa a’ deisealachadh airson falbh chun na 13 Geamannan Eileanan NatWest a ghabhas àite air Eilean Äland anns an Fhionnlain.  As dèidh mìosan de dh’obair chruaidh, dhìcheallach falbhaidh an sgioba air Disathairne 27 Òg Mhìos air itealan sònraichte a dh’Äland.

Seo an treas turas a tha sgioba nan Eilean Siar air pàirt a ghabhail aig na Geamannan, bha iad ann an Sealtainn ann an 2005 agus ann an Rhodes ann an 2007.   As dèidh a bhith a’ farpais aig sàr àrd ìre agus as dèidh cho math sa chaidh dhaibh aig na Geamannan eile, tha an sgioba gu math dòchasach gun urrainn dhaibh, a-rithist, àrd ìre a’ ruighinn.

Thuirt Cathraiche Comann Geamannan Eileanach nan Eilean Siar, an Comhairliche Iain Moireasdain:
“Tha e duilich a chreids gu bheil dà bhlìadhna air a dhol seachad on a bha sinn aig na Geamannan mu dheireadh.  ‘S e cothrom air leth a tha seo do lùth-chleasaichean nan eilean a bhith a farpais an aghaidh daoine a tha aig an aon ìre riutha fhèin.  Airson feadhainn de na lùth-chleasaichean, ‘s ann aig na Geamannan a tha seo a tha iad a’ tòiseachadh cùrsa-beatha anns an spòrs aca.  Bu mhath leam an cothrom seo a ghabhail taing a thoirt do na Comhairlean Coimhearsnachd, do Bhuill na Comhairle, Club Gnìomhachas nan Gàidheal agus a’ choimhearsnachd air fad airson an taic a tha iad air a thoirt seachad do ar sgiobaidhean tharis air na mìosan mu dheireadh far an robh iad a’ sireadh taic airgid.  Ach as aonais an taic airgid mhìorbhaileach a fhuair sinn bho Bardon Hebrides, MG ALBA agus Harris Tweed Hebrides, cha bhiodh e idir comasach a dhol ann.  Tha mi a’ coimhead air adhart gu mòr ris an t-seachdain ann an Äland agus tha mi an dòchas gun till sinn le ultach de bhràistean!”.
