ENHANCED SPORTS COVERAGE ON BBC ALBA

BBC ALBA’s sports package will be enhanced throughout the summer with the announcement today (Monday) that MG ALBA, the Gaelic Media Service, will be supporting the Western Isles team heading to the NatWest Island Games 2009.

The Island Games, first staged in 1985, takes place bi-annually and this year’s competition will be held on the Scandinavian island of Åland, in the Baltic Sea from 27 June to 4 July.

Over 3,200 athletes from 25 island communities around the world will be competing across a range of 15 sports, making this year’s NatWest Island Games the largest in its 24-year history.

The Western Isles team first took part in the 2005 Games held in Shetland and went on to enjoy medal success at the 2007 Games held in Rhodes with the team winning six medals including Gold in the 800 metres. Around 70 athletes will represent the Western Isles in Åland competing in athletics, football, golf and swimming.

MG ALBA is a partner with the BBC in the new Gaelic digital service BBC ALBA which launched in September 2008. Coverage of the World Island Games will be broadcast on BBC ALBA across its news and sports programmes.

Alasdair Morrison, Chairman of MG ALBA said: “In recognising the excitement, passion and community values that the Island Games can offer, MG ALBA is delighted to be supporting the Western Isles team in this competition. Support allows for the promotion of Gaelic media to key audiences on an international scale as well as enabling us to create prime Gaelic content for BBC ALBA, complementing the channels premier sports package on offer.

“I wish the athletes in the Western Isles team every success, as well as teams from the other Scottish island areas including Shetland and Orkney, with which the Western Isles has strong links.”

Welcoming the support from MG ALBA, Iain Morrison Chairperson of the Western Isles Island Games Association, said: “The Association is delighted to welcome MG ALBA as a major supporter of the Western Isles team for the NatWest Island Games 2009. Our team has performed admirably since we first took part in 2005 and we would hope that 2009 will bring further success to the Western Isles.

“In addition to representing the area on a world scale, the Island Games allows areas such as the Western Isles to promote its key industries. Attaining support from MG ALBA, whose ethos reflects our aims and objectives is tremendous.”

The Scandinavian island of Åland is located in the Baltic Sea between Finland and Sweden. It has a population of approximately 27,000 people, of which 11,000 live in Åland's only city, Mariehamn.
