April and May 2015: Craig rides Etape Loch Neas and Etape Caledonia

Craig McCulloch

Craig McCulloch enjoyd a successful start to his road racing season by doing well at both the Etape Loch Ness and the Etape Caledonia.

First up was the Etape Loch Ness - this ia a 66-mile / 106-km timed cycle challenge which starts and finishes by the riverside in Inverness. The pre-determined and fully signed route leaves Inverness and follows the A82 west to Fort Augustus, passing through the villages of Drumnadrochit and Invermoriston, arriving in Fort Augustus where it crosses the historic Caledonian Canal. The route then starts its return journey to Inverness via South Loch Ness on the B862/B852.

There were over 2,500 cyclists taking part in this hilly challenge, Craig managed to ride the route in 3h 6m and had the 42nd fastest climb.

From there he moved on to the Etape Caledonia - this is an even tougher challenge, 130k with 1,196m of climbing!

The route starts in Pitlochry, passes along beautiful Loch Tummel and Loch Rannoch before heading up and over the steep King of the Mountains climb up Schiehallion. From here it is downhil to Pitlochry - well mostly downhill!

Craig was even stronger at this event, finishing in 3h 48m 45s in a highly creditable 31st place out of 3767 starters!
