3 May 2015: British MTB Marathon Championships at Selkirk

Kerry and co celebrate!

So I had a wee bit of a shock win yesterday... and I'm now the extremely proud and super chuffed owner of a British Champs jersey after winning the British mtb marathon Championships yesterday!! Fab rides by Lee Craigie for 2nd, Mel Alexander 3rd, Verity Appleyard 4th and my ace buddy Isla Short 5th. It was a pretty brutal 75km race with 2400m of climbing around Selkirk and Innerleithen in 4hr 31min of racing. Fantastic event put on by Paul Mcgreal's team at Durty Events.

It was supposed to be a big training day and of course a hard effort too. I had 2 goals for the race, 1) don't blow up and 2) bloody well enjoy it. My race strategy was to push fairly hard at the start so I would be around better riders for the descents and then try and get into a group for the 2 long road straights so I could shelter a little from the wind. My tactical approach paid off and I lead from the start with some banter with the guys along the way. I definitely got slower as the race went on but I guess thats the nature of the beast! I also taped 2 fudge bars to my top tube...best secret weapon ever smile emoticon Did I blow up? No thank goodness! So my pacing was ok and did I enjoy it? It was a brilliant event! Out in the wilderness, on the hills, amazing descents, scenery, solitude, pain, banter, achievment and ace buddies to share it with along the way (amazing support on the course Nics!!).

I had 2 silly incidents... I'd taped my race food to my water bottles which you collect along the way at designated feed stations. I had 'cleverly' semi opened each bar so I could get to it easily but stupidly taped it too much to my bottle so it was a nightmare to get out. When I finally got my first bar out, it took me so long that I had to hold the packet with my teeth as I went through a techy section... Unfortunately I held the wrong end which dropped the bar out the bottom of its wrapper! I hope sheep like cliff bars! My second bottle was even worse and I had to eat my food with it still attached to the bottle, idiot!!

This is a particularly good win for my head as I had some very bad luck at the dentist over a month ago when irrigant accidentally leaked into my cheek causing a severe infection and inflammation, 2 courses of antibiotics and 2 long trips to a specialist. It really affected my form and I had a terrible time in Italy going backwards in my race (hence the lack of posts recently), very tough to deal with when you invest so much in the sport (I also left my passport behind and had to stay an extra day which was not cool!). So I've been struggling to find my form again as I react quite badly to antibiotics and my body had to work overtime to heal itself given it is already in a compromised position because of the training and racing I do. I completely underestimated the impact trying to train and race when ill would have on me but it is another lesson and at least it happened early season.

My sister had an incredible ride in the 50km race too coming in as 1 of the top lassies, super proud of her and how much she is coming on on the bike

As always a huge thanks to everyone who helps and supports me along the way... Rock and Road Cycles, Loch Duart, MacInnes Bros, Stirling Optical, Jo Walters Trust, Braveheart, all my supporters back home in the islands...couldn't do it without the investment from others so thank you.

Totally cheesing
