Kerry & Kirsty do it again

The Island Games have a unique event - Mountain BIke Crit racing. This is a short course XC race with ramps, jumps and drop-offs to keep the crowd entertained and leave the riders wanting more. With each lap taking just over 2 minutes, there is always action in the stadium section which is perfect for spectators..

Clear favourites for the event were Kerry and Kirsty - they had proved they were the class of the field in the longer XC race by taking the Gold and Silver medals. However, this is mountain biking racing - crashes and mechanical problems are all part of the sport so there is no such thing as a sure thing. Something they were accutely aware of as the waited for the race to start.

Kerry made her intentions clear, she raced from the start line and was in the lead as the ridere took the first bend with Kirsty not far behind.

From there the course took the ladies over a couple of "double" jumps, the first one was smaller and Kerry made it look easy as she landed it smoothly. The second "double" was just too long for the speed riders were able to carry in to it and as a result all the riders chose to roll through rather than risk a crash by going for it and landing short. The course then twisted up through the trees, with a couple of short sharp steep climbs and an awkward dusty off-camber descent before dropping down into the stadium section to go over the ramp and round through the tunnel back to the start of the next lap.

There was a fantastic atmosphere as the race progressed - with the large crowd cheering the competitors round as the enthusiastic race commentator kept them informed. Kerry quickly pulled away from Kirsty and Kirsty did the same to the rest of the field - there was no doubt who the best riders in the race were!

Then the commentator started getting excited and was talking about a mechanical for the leader! As Kerry came back into the stadium and up over the ramps to the pit area it was clear she had a rear puncture. This was good news in that this was an easy repair not like a broken derailleur or other mechanical. Kerry pulled in to the pits where a spare wheel was ready - which she insisted on changing herself. Less than a minute later she rejoined the race but now she was in second place - behind Kirsty who had around a half minute lead.

Kerry wasn't going to let Kirsty take the win though - she absolutely nailed the lap and caught Kirsty on the descent. Kirsty let her through and normal service was resumed - Kerry leading with Kirsty comfortably in second place.

The race continued for the regulation 45 minutes + 3 laps and the Macphees just rode away from the field. The only things that could stop them were mechanical problems or crashes - so, even though they had a huge lead, the last few laps were still nervous ones for the WIIGA supporters. Thankfully, the laps ticked by without incident and the ladies crossed the line for another WIIGA 1 - 2!

This was another stunning performance which double-handedly moved Team WIIGA into 3rd place in the cycling medal table - that is the overall medal table, not just the ladies events! Only the Isle of Man and Jersey won more medals than the Western Isles!
