One MTB XC Race, Two Golds and one Silver!

The first race for the WIIGA Mountain Bike Team was the Ladies XC (cross country) race. The course was grassy with tough technical, dusty descents and steep climbs and the "infamous" rock garden!

Conditions were brutal on the day - well into the 30s heat as Jersey enjoyed its hottest weather for 10 years! Despite this the pace was fast straight from the gun and one of the fastest starters was Kirsty! She was second to the first left hand turn with Kerry sitting safely on the outside of the field in fifth place. The riders sped round a series of swooping turns down by the pits and on down into the valley. Kerry was nearly taken out by another rider on one of these sharp bends but after a quick dab she was off and racing again.

Kirsty came past the pits in the lead but this was to be short-lived - on the first tricky descent she crashed out and was overtaken by Kerry who was absolutely flying. Kerry already had a big lead at the end of the first lap - a lead that just grew bigger throughout the 7 lap race. There was some chat amongst the crowd about whether she would use the slightly slower but safer "B line" to avoid the rock garden in the race. No chance! She rode the rocks every time - the only lady to even attempt it!

As Kerry disappeared into the distance, Kirsty was comfortably in second place with over a minute's lead over the Jersey rider in third place. Then she hit a problem and had to come into the pit area - her handlebars were loose. Normally a simple fix but the position of her race number meant that there was no access to the bottom two bolts - the top two bolts were tightened and she set-off again. She was still in front of the Jersey girl but now only by 40s. Which was down to 30s at the end of the following lap. By ths time Kirsty's handlebars had worked loose again but there was no time to call in to the pits and she pushed on.

Kerry was showing her class as she rode away from the field and by the start of the last lap she had built up a lead of over 9 minutes! Once riders were lapped, they were pulled out of the race and given their finishing position. When Kerry started her last lap, only the first three ladies were on the same lap and still out on the course.

Nervous times! Mountain biking is a tough sport and mechanical problems, crashes and sheer exhaustion are all part of the game - we all had our fingers crossed that none of these would happen to the Flying MacPhees!

No need to worry! Kerry appeared over the hill and cruised over the finishing line in first place - a stunning performance which clearly confirmed her Elite mountain bike status! After a quick drink and a dowsing in iced water she joined the rest of us as she waited to see who would finish in second place.

Kirsty didn't disappoint! She had a really strong last lap and crossed the line in second place having extended her lead over the Jersey rider in third place. It was individual Gold and Silver for the Western Isles and another Gold in the team competition - fantastic!
