MTB XC Training - not for the faint-hearted!

As soon as the team had arrived at the Hotel Cristina (the perfect choice for the team accommodation - they looked after us supberbly all week), the cycle team set about rebuilding their bikes - keeping fingers crossed that they had survived the baggage handlers! No major damage was reported and things were looking good until Kerry and Kirsty arrived! They had arrived on an earlier flight and taken themselves off up to the XC course for a recce. They didn't seem too perturbed by the blood running down Kerry's knee and Kerry insisted it was just a scratch and headed off to clean it up.

However, it turned out to be more than just a scratch - the team physio had a look at it and decided that a trip to A&E was required. So while the rest of us were enjoying the Opening Ceremony Kerry found herself in hospital having her knee stitched up! Kerry, being Kerry, insisted on the stitches being put in with her knee bent so that she could still compete without tearing the stitches out! Those of you of a nervous disposition should look away now as the picture below shows Kerry's scratch!!

The next day was the official 2 hour practice session on the course and the team road up to Jubilee Hill to have a first look at the taped off course.

The course was grassy with tough technical, dusty descents and steep climbs and also the tricky "rock garden" section which had caused Kerry to fall and tear her knee open the day before. Did that put her off? No chance! She headed straight to the rock garden and rode it several times until she had found the best line through the rocks.

The general opinion seemd to be that it was a relentlessly tough course with no easy sections to recover on because even the flat parts were on grass which meant high rolling resistance. Some of the dusty descents were really tricky and the climbs tough - it looked like it was going to be a long hard race!
