Crash Ends Craig's Road Crit Race

Team Shetland were more visible than Craig at the start of the Crit Race!
Team Shetland were more visible than Craig at the start of the Crit Race!

The Road Crit race took place on a 1.5k lap of St Helier town centre with the race distance being 60 minutes plus 5 laps. Riders were allowed to stay in the race when lapped but were given clear instructions not to get involved in the race for the lead once this had happened. Lapped riders were given the bell with 5 laps to go and raced for position over the next lap - so only those riders on the lead lap were allowed to complete the race distance.

Craig looked to be going well as he passed the pits towards the end of the first lap and was sitting comfortably in mid peleton. Next time round, he wasn't there - maybe I had missed him in the pack as they sped by. But no, next time round it was clear he was definitely not there - what had happened? A quick word with a race commissaire revealed that there had been a crash at the end of the first lap on the sharp right hander just beyond the finish line. The commiissaire confirmed that Craig was involved but said he was going to take a lap out and rejoin - wrong! Just then, Paul Smith appeared at the pits to give me the bad news - Craig was pretty bashed up but would be ok but his bike was not so good and he was out of the race.

It turned out that Craig had been hit from behind as he approached the sharp bend, he missed the turn as a result and had basically head butted the crash barriers at full speed! He was lucky to escape with just bruising. Worse news for him was that his carbon race bike was beyond repair - it had a cracked frame and a broken wheel.

Huge crowds lined the whole course and created a superb atmosphere as they cheered the riders all the way round. The race continued at an incredible pace and riders kept dropping off the bunch until only a small group were left on the lead lap - it was anyone's race as they entered the last lap!

Isle of Man looked favourites to win but the long uphill sprint to the finish proved too much for them and it was the Bermudan rider who took the win with Isle of Man in second and third place. A superb event which the spectators enjoyed immensely. Pity it was also yet another hard luck story for the men's cycle team!
