Craig's Time Trial Adventure!

Craig McCulloch's introduction to International Cycling was interesting to say the least. There were multiple incidents as he negotiated the twists and turns of this tricky 35km course.

Riders were set off at one minute intervals. The race started with a fast descent over to Jersey's west coast at La Corbiere lighthouse. It was just after this section that the fun really began!

St Ouen's Bay

The race was not being run on closed roads and the section alongside St Ouen's Bay was ridden in both directions. This meant that riders and support vehicles were on both sides of the road. This is also a busy tourist and surfing beach - which meant lots more traffic to be contended with. Some of the time Craig was travelling faster than the traffic but could not overtake because of oncoming traffic. At other times cars would overtake him then brake to make a right or left turn off the road causing Craig to have to take evasive action and lose momentum.

One of these incidents resulted in him being forced off the road and into an adjacent car park! With no way of knowing which way the slowing car in front of him was going at a crossroads, he guessed right and he went left but the car turned left forcing him to turn hard left and into the car park!!

After climbing up out of the bay into the countryside, Craig continued to run into traffic problems, He caught a slow-moving coach on a particularly twisty section of the road and could not overtake - more time lost!

Slightly further on, on a fast downhill section, marshals were so busy directing traffic that they failed to tell him to turn right - he went straight on down a farm track. A yell from Gavin in the team car behind got his attention and he had to stop, turn round, ride back up the hill and rejoin the course - yet more time lost!.

And to add insult to injury - another coach interfered with his finish! Craig raced up the final long drag to the finish and managed to catch up with a bus as he did so. For some reason, the driver stopped the bus right on the finish line and Craig had to flirt with the barriers, traffic islands and kerbs to avoid the bus and get his bike over the line!

It is fair to say all these adventure cost him him a few minutes - it is also fair to say that many other riders would have encountered similar problems! He finished in a time of 57m 46s around 10 minutes behind the Faroese winner who took just under 48m for the 22 mile course!
